Thangadurai Samuel is a distinguished classical guitarist from South India, renowned for his profound contributions to Western classical music in the region. Originating from a family of musicians, he embarked on his guitar journey at the age of 17 as a self-taught artist, cultivating a repertoire of high standards. His brother, Mr. George Samuel, a violinist, introduced him to classical music, and under the mentorship of Mr. Doraisamy, Samuel achieved his Licentiate of Trinity College London (LTCL).
In 1971, Samuel commenced his teaching career at Musee Musicals in Chennai, training numerous students for the Trinity College of Music, London examinations. In 1970, he became the first classical guitar candidate to receive a diploma by completing the practical component of the Trinity College of Music London examination at the Madras centre.
As a solo classical guitarist, his inaugural concert took place at the American Consulate, followed by performances at the French, German, and Russian Consulates. He became a member of the Madras Chamber Orchestra and was recognised as a Grade ‘A’ artist by All India Radio and Doordarshan, and served as a member of the Zonal Audition Committee.
Throughout South India, Samuel has performed in concerts sponsored by Alliance Française, Indo-German Friendship Society, Max Mueller Bhavan, Madras Chamber Orchestra, and Madras Philharmonic and Choral Society.
In 1988, he founded the Madras Guitar Society, which evolved into the Madras Guitar and String Ensemble in 1991. He has composed pieces for solo guitar and orchestra, notably performed by German guitarist Mr. Hucky Eichelmann alongside the Madras Guitar and String Ensemble on 17th July 1992 in Madras, receiving high acclaim.
Over the decades, Samuel has trained a multitude of passionate musicians, many of whom have gone on to become acclaimed composers and performers. Even at this stage in life, he remains humble and welcoming to new musicians. His passion for teaching has only deepened with time, and his unwavering dedication to the art of classical guitar continues to inspire generations.
